If you arrive in Dubrovnik, do not miss until you go to the city walls. This unique symbol is sending intact imageof the city, which is recognized throughout the world. It is one of the things that makes Dubrovnik, one of the the most beautiful places on the Mediterranean.
Uninterrupted flow of the walls is 1940 meters long and consists of a series of forts, towers, bastions, kazametas and separated forts that comprise the city. The walls were built systematically, from 10th to 17th century, when there was a constant threat to the city and the Dubrovnik Republic. Main wall toward the mainland side is wide between 4 and 6 meters and the sea is a bit narrower and the value of 1.5 to 3 meters. The height of the walls in some places is up to 25 meters.
At four rised points of the walls, are built particularly strong fortifications. Minčeta is called the north tower, isolated fortress of Revelin is located on the east side for defense the city harbor, and on the southeast side is complex of St. John fort. On the western entrance to the city is interestinly shaped fortresses Bokar and powerful and independent fortress Lovrijenac, which defended the city from the dangers of the sea and land.
During the great danger, Dubrovnik was defendened by about 120 artillery tubes from these walls. The guns were manufactured in local workshops, to which Dubrovnik was known. There are two main entrances to the city for residents to maintain contact with the outside world. On the western side is well protected Pile Gate and on the east side is Gate of Ploče. One of the most important areas of the maritime commerce is the City port, where there are two doors through which one enters the city, Gate of Ponte and Gate of the fish market.
Today's walk Dubrovnik city walls and streets of the old town is one of the biggest tourist attraction. Walking through this picturesque town makes visitors feel like they are in theater at a truly special performance.
Ticket price to the city walls is 50 kn for adults and for children under 18 years 20 kn.
Summer working time is from 8 AM to 7 PM, and winter is from 10 AM to 3 PM.
Fort Minčeta
With its luxury it dominates the town for centuries, and is one of the most beautiful symbol of Dubrovnik. Its architecture iputs it among the most beautiful fortifications in the world. It was built by the famous Renaissance architect Michelozzo Michelozzi and one of the greatest Croatian architect Juraj Dalmatian. From the top of this beautiful building extends a view of the entire city and its surroundings.
Fort Revelin
It was built outside the city walls, and has an irregular rectangular shape. Situated on the eastern part of town, in front of the Gate of Ploče. It was built in the 16th century to defend the entrance to the city and harbor. Revelin had the highest terrace in Dubrovnik, and today this area is ideal for holding performances in the Dubrovnik Summer Festival . In the winter months in the inner part of the fortress Dubrovnik symphonic orchestra hold concerts, and attracts many guests.
Fort Lovrijenac
The monumental fortress, is situated at the western entrance to the city. Rises on a gorge 37 meters high. Fort was a problem to everyone who tried to attack the city, and threaten the security of the Republic, and especially Venice. For centuries , Lovrijenac is defender of freedom, and on its doors has carved message for all the world: "Non bene pro toto libertas venditur Auro" ("Freedom can not be sold for all the treasures of the world"). Today it is one of the most beautiful stages of the world, where many performances are held during the Summer Festival. One of the shows that take place herr is Shakespeare's "Hamlet."
Fort St. John
Built in 16th century and was the main defense of the city's port. Be sure to visit this castle if you are in Dubrovnik. The ground floor is an aquarium, and on the 1st and 2nd floor is located the Maritime Museum.
Fort Bokar
In the history, it's task was to defend the main entrance gate to the city, bridge and moat at Pile. Today in the Fort Bokar are held events during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival.
